Choosing an EX40 trim comes down to a practical question: how do you actually drive and charge day to day? A short, predictable commute with reliable overnight charging points toward one trim. Longer weekly distances or occasional road trips point toward another. This guide walks Ontario shoppers through the 2026 EX40’s four Canadian trims with that routine in mind.
The 2026 EX40 comes in four trims: Core, Plus, Ultra, and Black Edition Ultra. Core is the value-focused starting point built around dependable daily transportation. Plus layers in comfort and sound upgrades, Ultra adds the EX40’s most complete driver-assist and interior materials, and Black Edition Ultra pairs that same substance with a darker, styling-led look.
Black Edition Ultra is confirmed to come exclusively with the Twin Motor all-wheel-drive setup: 402 hp, 494 lb-ft of torque, a 4.8-second 0-100 km/h time, and an 82 kWh battery (79 kWh usable) good for 418 km of range. Cargo space, 1,400 L with the rear seats folded and 410 L with them up, is available across the EX40. Trim choice here comes down to features and technology, not cargo capacity.
Core is built for buyers who want a straightforward EV without extra options. Wireless phone charging, comfort front seats, heated front seats, and a rear parking camera come standard, riding on 19-inch wheels. Interestingly, the air quality system is standard on Core but not carried into Plus, Ultra, or Black Edition Ultra.
If your weekly driving is short and consistent, and you charge overnight at home without needing premium audio or advanced driver-assist add-ons, Core covers the basics. Shoppers who want a panoramic roof, upgraded sound, or Pilot Assist should look higher up the lineup, since none of those are available on Core.
Plus is the flexible middle step. It adds a panoramic roof, HomeLink, a 360-degree camera, fog lamps, and higher-level interior illumination as standard, while Harman Kardon Premium Sound, Pilot Assist, and heated rear seats all become available for the first time, though as options rather than standard fitment. The air purifier with remote cabin pre-cleaning also becomes available at Plus and carries through Ultra and Black Edition Ultra.
This trim suits drivers whose weekly kilometres run longer than average, or who want the option to add premium sound and driver-assist tech without committing to Ultra pricing. If you already know you want Pilot Assist and the air purifier included as standard, that’s an Ultra-and-up story.
Ultra brings the EX40’s most capable options in as standard equipment. Pilot Assist, the 360-degree camera, and the air purifier with remote pre-cleaning all move from optional to included, and wheel size grows to 20 inches. Ultra also opens up interior materials unavailable lower in the lineup, including Connect Suede textile/Microtech upholstery, a Zinc Tailored Wool Blend option, and the Crystal gear shift by Orrefors.
Ultra fits highway commuters who want Pilot Assist working every drive, families who value a standard air purifier, and shoppers who want the EX40’s most complete interior without moving into Black Edition Ultra’s styling package.
Black Edition Ultra carries the same standard equipment as Ultra but swaps the palette for a darker, more focused look: black-edition 20-inch wheels, colour-coordinated mirror covers instead of gloss black, and a narrower four-colour exterior range limited to Crystal White, Onyx Black, Denim Blue, and Vapour Grey. It’s also the one trim confirmed to arrive exclusively with the Twin Motor setup described above.
This trim suits buyers who want Ultra’s substance with a more urban, monochrome presentation, and who are set on the Twin Motor’s 402 hp and 4.8-second 0-100 km/h time rather than a lighter-duty setup.

If your weekly distance is short and you charge at home nightly, Core meets the need without paying for options you won’t use. Plus earns its place once your routine includes longer trips, or you want the choice to add premium sound and Pilot Assist rather than buy them outright.
Ultra makes sense once Pilot Assist and cabin air filtration move from nice-to-have to must-have, especially for drivers who spend real time on the highway. Black Edition Ultra fits the same buyer who also wants the EX40’s darkest styling package and is committed to the Twin Motor setup.
Whichever trim you’re leaning toward, the EX40’s DC fast-charging window, 29 minutes for a 10-80% top-up, and its roughly 8-hour Level 2 home charging time mean occasional longer trips don’t require rethinking your daily charging habit.
The 2026 EX40 lineup gives Ontario drivers four distinct ways to match an electric SUV to a daily routine, from Core’s straightforward basics to Black Edition Ultra’s standard driver-assist features and styling.
