Some dealerships measure their history in years. Ours is measured in generations.

Volvo Cars Mississauga was established in November 1957, when Thomas McMillan Sr. emigrated from Britain and co-founded what was then known as McMillan & Saunders Volvo — one of the first Volvo retailers in Canada, just outside Toronto. He came with a mechanic’s hands and a willingness to build something from the ground up. That foundation has held ever since.

His son Robert grew up inside that story. By 17, he was already selling Volvos. When the Sales Manager position opened — just as Robert was finishing university in Michigan — he wanted it. His father’s response has stayed with the family ever since:

“You can sit in the chair, but depending on how well you do, the result will be how hard I look for a replacement.”

Robert sat in the chair. They never looked back.

More Than a Business. A Family Commitment.

“Volvo has always been part of our lives,” Robert McMillan has said. “The history of the brand resonates in our family and always will. It has been the core of our family, and we will continue representing the brand with pride.”

That pride is not a talking point. It’s the reason the same name has been above the door since 1957.

Today, a third generation carries that legacy forward. Thomas McMillan — named after his late grandfather — serves as General Manager, continuing a lineage that now spans nearly seven decades.

For nearly seventy years, the McMillans have done things the same way: honestly, personally, and without shortcuts. That is still how we do business today.

Thomas McMillan Sr.

Co-founder. A British-born mechanic who believed in Volvo before Canada did. He built something that outlasted him — and that is exactly what he intended.

From washing cars as a teenager to running the sales floor. Robert carried his father’s work ethic into every relationship he built at this dealership.
