Volvo engines have paired performance and efficiency like no other manufacturer on the market since the manufacturer’s humble beginnings. And for 2022, Volvo is pushing things even further by adding mild hybrid technologies to its T5 and T6 engines, which are now named B5 and B6.
Here, we take a look at the difference between the outgoing T6 engine and the new B6 engine.
The B6 engine is more advanced and delivers more performance
The T6 engine was already very powerful for its displacement. This 2.0-litre, four-cylinder engine is fitted with a turbocharger and a supercharger for optimal response in all situations. The results are higher than most rival engines in the industry, with 316 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. With the B6, engineers have kept this very successful and efficient recipe, but have added an electric motor that improves increased performance and reduced fuel consumption.
The B6 engine offers 295 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. Even if power is slightly lower, the increased torque is what makes it so interesting in day-to-day driving, providing better accelerations from the starting line, when getting on the onramp or when passing on the highway.
Impressive fuel economy with Volvo's new B6 engine
This mild hybrid system helps the B6 engine keep consumption low. And with the current fuel costs at the pump, that can only be a good thing. For example, the popular Volvo XC60 SUV only uses 11.0 L/100 km in the city and 8.7 L/100 km on the highway. This is an improvement from the T6-powered XC60, which consumed 11.7 L/100 km in the city and 8.6 L/100 km on the highway, especially considering the increased torque.
In the end, the B6 is more fuel efficient and offers more torque to provide unparalleled drivability. You will find the powerful B6 engine a variety of Volvo vehicles.
