The Volvo XC40 has spent years as one of the brand's most popular models, and it is about to look and feel noticeably different. Volvo is rolling out a wide set of updates across the compact SUV, touching everything from the way it looks on the street to how it senses the world around it.
If you already know the XC40 or are just getting familiar with it, here is a rundown of exactly what is changing.
Outside, the Look Gets Sharper
The most visible change sits up front, where a reworked take on Volvo's Thor's Hammer Matrix LED headlights gives the XC40 a more distinct signature. That pairs with an upgraded grille and a redesigned front bumper, hood, and front wings for a more contemporary stance. Around back, new LED tail lights, an upgraded tailgate, and a redesigned rear bumper complete the refresh, and buyers can now choose from 18-inch, 19-inch, or 20-inch diamond cut wheels.
The Cabin Gets a Bigger, Smarter Screen
Step inside and the biggest change is a new 11.2-inch centre screen, larger and sharper than before, running Volvo's latest software experience. It takes fewer taps to reach the functions drivers use most, and it introduces Google Gemini, an AI assistant capable of understanding natural, everyday language for things like route planning, finding a stop along the way, or managing incoming messages.
Comfort details have been reworked too. An updated wireless phone charger and smarter storage spots make the cabin easier to live with day to day. New material and colour choices are joining the options list as well, including Arianne Cardamom leather paired with Brown Ash wood decor for the first time, along with refined interior lighting and Black Ash or aluminium trim choices.
The Safety Systems Get a New Foundation
Underneath the styling changes sits a new advanced software and sensor platform. New front and corner radars, a new front camera, new rear corner radars, 12 new ultrasonic sensors, and new parking cameras give the XC40 a wider and more detailed view of its surroundings than before.
That new sensing hardware unlocks a handful of specific upgrades:
- Door Opening Alert, which warns occupants before a door swings open into a passing cyclist or vehicle
- An expanded Pilot Assist system with lane change assist for smoother support on longer drives
- A 360 camera upgraded to a 3D view, making tight parking spots easier to judge
If a potential collision is detected, the car is designed to respond in real time, whether by steering around the danger with automatic emergency steering or braking instantly with automatic emergency braking.
A Platform Designed to Keep Improving
Because much of the XC40's software runs on the same architecture used across the rest of Volvo's lineup, updates like the new screen layout and Gemini integration are built to keep evolving through future over-the-air updates. In other words, the changes announced today are a starting point rather than the finish line for what the refreshed XC40 can do.
