Volvo Cars has announced significant upgrades to its infotainment system, soon to be available in the 2025 XC90, and as a free over-the-air update for millions of existing Volvo vehicles worldwide. The new system, originally developed for the all-electric EX90 and EX30 models, aims to enhance user experience and provide a safer, distraction-free driving environment.
The updated infotainment system in the 2025 XC90 features a larger 11.2-inch central screen with 21% increased pixel density, offering clearer display and improved functionality. The redesigned home screen now prominently displays frequently used apps and controls, such as maps, media, and phone, reducing the need for excessive screen interactions while driving.
A key innovation is the contextual bar, which dynamically presents the most recently used applications and situation-specific features. For instance, exterior camera icons appear at low speeds to assist with manoeuvring in tight spaces.
By 2025, approximately 2.5 million Volvo customers globally will receive this free update, applicable to vehicles built since 2020 and equipped with the Android Automotive operating system. This rollout is part of Volvo's strategy to continually optimize vehicles through regular over-the-air updates.
Erik Severinson, Head of Product and Strategy at Volvo Cars, stated, "Our next-generation user experience will bring a significant improvement to the customer experience and is an important step in our journey to offer our customers human-centric technology solutions."
The update also includes specific enhancements for plug-in hybrid drivers. Easy access to driving modes, such as the "Pure" mode for electric-only driving in urban areas, helps maximize the potential of electrified powertrains for improved efficiency.
Volvo's new infotainment experience is adaptable to various screen shapes and sizes, ensuring uniform access to technology across new and existing models, ensuring that every qualifying Volvo vehicle benefits from the full range of features. This flexibility allows Volvo to provide the latest infotainment experience across its entire lineup, from the brand-new XC90 to a pre-owned XC40,
The system's intuitive design and seamless integration aim to minimize distractions, allowing drivers to focus on the road ahead. This update is part of Volvo's broader initiative to enhance vehicle functionality over time, showcasing the company's innovative approach in the automotive industry's infotainment sector.
As the rollout progresses throughout the year, Volvo will continue to refine and improve the system based on user feedback, demonstrating the company's ongoing commitment to upgrading customer experiences and vehicle technology.
