Volvo Increases the Range of the 2028 XC60 and XC90 Plug-in Hybrid SUVs

Volvo has given two of its most popular SUVs a longer electric range. The plug-in hybrid XC60 and XC90 now travel further on battery power alone before the petrol engine needs to step in. For drivers who use their SUV for school runs, errands, and daily commutes, that means more trips can be finished without using a drop of fuel.

The update goes beyond the battery. The XC60 also gets a full design refresh inside and out, along with new safety and driver support features. The XC90 keeps its familiar shape and gains some of the same smart technology found in the XC60. Here is a closer look at what has changed in both plug-in hybrid SUVs.

A Longer Electric Range for Both SUVs

The plug-in hybrid XC60 can now travel up to 126 kilometres on electric power before its petrol engine needs to turn on, and the XC90 can go up to 117 kilometres. Both SUVs pair a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine with a stronger electric motor built into the rear axle. The engine makes 247 hp on its own, and the electric motor adds up to 174 hp, for a combined system output of about 455 hp. The new floor-mounted battery holds 41.2 kWh of energy, with 37.9 kWh usable, roughly double the size of the previous plug-in hybrid battery. On a Level 2 home charger, a full charge takes about 6 hours in the XC60 and about 7 hours in the XC90.

With a full battery and a full tank of gas, Volvo estimates a combined driving range of around 950 kilometres for the XC60 and 901 kilometres for the XC90. The XC60 goes from 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 4.5 seconds, and the XC90 does the same in 4.9 seconds, with both SUVs reaching a top speed of 180 km/h (112 mph). When the battery runs low, the petrol engine takes over, so a longer trip is never a problem. Both the XC60 and XC90 also remain available as mild hybrids for drivers who prefer that setup.

A New Look for the XC60

The XC60 has a new front and rear design. A reshaped grille, front bumper, hood, and front wings give the SUV a more modern look, and new wheel designs round out the exterior update. The Thor's Hammer headlights have also been redesigned with a cleaner, simpler light pattern. At the back, the tailgate, rear lights, and rear bumper have been updated with a more horizontal shape for a steadier stance.

Inside, the XC60 has a new dashboard and door panel design. Wood trim and Cardamom coloured, ventilated Nappa leather bring warmth to the cabin, and upgraded interior lighting adds a calmer feel after dark.

More Ways to Stay Safe in the XC60

The XC60 now comes with an expanded set of active safety features. If the car senses a possible collision, it can warn the driver, brake on its own, or steer around the danger. It can also warn a passenger before they open a door into a passing cyclist. A wider set of radars, cameras, and other sensors supports these features, along with driver support tools such as lane change assist and a 360 degree camera with a 3D view.

Shared Technology in Both SUVs

Both the XC60 and XC90 use an 11.2 inch screen running Volvo Car UX, the company's latest infotainment system. Google Gemini is also built into both SUVs. This AI assistant understands everyday language, so drivers can ask it to plan a route, find a place to stop, or manage a message without digging through menus.

Comfort and Sound in the XC90

The XC90 keeps its role as a spacious, seven seat family SUV. Its cabin uses natural light, wood trim, and premium materials to create a calm space for longer drives. Buyers who want a stronger listening experience can add the optional Bowers and Wilkins premium sound system.

Software That Keeps Improving

Like other new Volvo models, the updated XC60 and XC90 receive regular over the air software updates. This means each SUV can gain new features over time, often without a trip to the shop.
