The 2021 Volvo XC90 vs. 2022 Acura MDX: Volvo Ingenuity Takes the Lead

When your family wants top safety, comfort, convenience, efficiency and more, the 2021 XC90 fulfills your needs. The Volvo XC90 also demonstrates advanced capabilities with a choice of three gas and hybrid powertrains that help you go more places.

To help illustrate the excitement of the XC90, we compare it to a competitor—the 2022 Acura MDX.

The 2021 Volvo XC90 is in a different efficiency and power class

The XC90 lineup features several of Volvo's best powertrains. The base T5, included in the Momentum, produces 250 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. This demonstration of power is complemented by a surprising fuel consumption rating of 11.5 L/100 km in the city and 8.4 L/100 km on the highway. It also proves to be more efficient than the MDX, which has a higher consumption of 12.6 / 9.4 L/100 km.

Next up, the XC90's T6 powertrain outputs 316 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Available in all XC90 grades, the T6 is more powerful than what the MDX offers, and it features a lower combined fuel consumption rating of 10.5 L/100 km.

The XC90 has something else the MDX doesn't—a hybrid. The XC90 Recharge features the T8 hybrid powertrain system that outputs a very impressive 400 horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque. This is the most powerful and efficient SUV in this comparison with a fuel consumption rating of 9.1/8.4 L/100 km.

The 2022 Acura MDX drives with a 3.5-litre V6 that produces 290 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque. It is the least efficient engine in this comparison and less powerful than the XC90's T6- and T8-equipped models. An MDX Type-S variant is supposedly on the way, but details about availability are still scarce.

The 2021 Volvo XC90 extends its advantages

The XC90 is more than just a family carrier, it's a lifestyle vehicle. With a towing capacity of 4,960 pounds you can bring along a camper, watercraft, or ATVs anywhere.

The XC90 is also features a much more refined interior. With its unique Scandinavian style and amenities, it goes beyond the more traditional style of the MDX. The Volvo also gives you access to technologies like the intuitive Sensus infotainment system, as well as the very helpful Pilot Assist drive assistance feature.
