EX30, EX40, and EX60: How Do Volvo EVs Differ?

EX30, EX40, and EX60: How Do Volvo EVs Differ?

Volvo now builds electric SUVs in several sizes, and the names follow a simple pattern: the bigger the number, the bigger the vehicle. The EX30 is the small one, the EX40 sits in the middle, and the EX60 is the mid-size family SUV built on Volvo's newest electric platform.

Size is only the start, though. These three models differ in power, range, charging speed, cargo room, and towing strength. This guide lines them up side by side so you can see which Volvo EV fits your driving.

Volvo EX30: The Small SUV With the Quickest Launch

The EX30 is Volvo's smallest SUV, at 4,233 mm long. That size makes it easy to park and easy to place in traffic.

The EX30 is small and quick. The Twin Motor Performance model sends 422 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque to all four wheels and reaches 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds, the quickest time of the three. Its 69 kWh battery delivers up to 407 km of range, and a DC fast charge from 10 to 80 per cent takes 26.5 minutes at 153 kW.

Drivers who prefer rear-wheel drive can choose the Single Motor Extended Range model, with 268 hp and 253 lb-ft of torque from the same 69 kWh battery. Cargo space measures 318 L behind the rear seats and up to 1,000 L with them folded.

Volvo EX40: The Balanced Middle Choice

The EX40 is 207 mm longer than the EX30 and uses that length for passengers and cargo. Rear legroom is 917 mm, compared with 821 mm in the EX30, and the cargo area grows to 452 L with the seats up and 1,328 L at its maximum. A 21 L front storage compartment adds a handy spot for charging cables.

The Twin Motor powertrain produces 402 hp and 494 lb-ft of torque with all-wheel drive, good for a 0 to 100 km/h time of 4.8 seconds. The 82 kWh battery provides 418 km of range, and a 10 to 80 per cent DC charge takes 29 minutes at 150 kW.

The EX40 also steps up in towing. It is rated for 1,600 kg (3,527 lbs), well above the 907 kg (2,000 lbs) of the EX30.

Volvo EX60: The Longest Range and Fastest Charging

The 2027 Volvo EX60 is the first vehicle built on Volvo's SPA3 architecture, and it changes the numbers across the board. The P10 AWD has a range of up to 531 km certified by Natural Resources Canada on 20-inch and 21-inch wheels, the longest of any Volvo sold in Canada to date. A P12 AWD variant has also been announced, with a Volvo estimate of up to 640 km.

Charging is where the EX60 pulls furthest ahead. Its 800-volt electrical system takes the 95 kWh battery from 10 to 80 per cent in 18 minutes at a 400 kW charger. The P10 AWD can add up to 265 km of range in 10 minutes. The EX60 is also the first Volvo with a native North American Charging Standard port, giving adapter-free access to more than 29,000 Tesla Supercharger stations across Canada and the United States.

The EX60 leads on strength and space as well:

  • 503 hp and 524 lb-ft of torque, with 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds.
  • 523 L of cargo space with the seats up and 1,647 L at maximum, plus a 52 L front compartment.
  • 951 mm of rear legroom on a 2,970 mm wheelbase.
  • Towing capacity of 2,040 kg (4,497 lbs).

Inside, the EX60 is the first Volvo to launch with Google Gemini, and it introduces Volvo's multi-adaptive safety belt for front-seat occupants. Two package levels are offered: Plus and Ultra.

Which Volvo EV Is Right for You?

Pick the EX30 if you drive mostly in town, park in tight spaces, and want the quickest acceleration in the group.

Pick the EX40 if you need more rear-seat and cargo room in a compact footprint, along with 1,600 kg (3,527 lbs) of towing capacity.

Pick the EX60 if you take long trips, carry a family, or tow. Its range of up to 531 km, 18-minute fast charging, and 2,040 kg (4,497 lbs) towing rating make it the most capable electric SUV of the three.
