The Volvo XC40 is a superbly appointed luxury compact SUV. It encompasses everything Volvo stands for in terms of safety, performance and technology in a stylish package that will take you anywhere with the utmost efficiency. The XC40 is offered with a choice of powertrains; two gas engines in the XC40 and one fully electric powertrain in the XC40 Recharge.
Here, we breakdown what the XC40 has to offer and outline some of the differences between the two models.
Great all-gas efficiency in the XC40 and maximum range in the XC40 Recharge
Under the hood of the XC40, buyers have a choice of two engines. The first option is the T4, which is 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with an output of 187 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque – plenty of power and torque for a base engine.
The second option is the T5, which has an output of 248 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. This one elevates the level of performance with even more capability. Both engines are mated to Volvo’s quick-shifting 8-speed automatic transmission, and are both very efficient.
Now, the XC40 Recharge’s powertrain takes things to new levels in terms of full-electric performance. It delivers up to 402 horsepower and will provide 335 kilometres of full-electric range, which is more than enough if you’re looking to zip around the city, or take a long trip to the country.
Space and technology dominates the cabin
What’s great about the XC40 and the XC40 Recharge is that they both have the same great style outside, with very few differences. Inside, both models exhibit tremendous amounts of refinement along with the unique Scandinavian style that Volvo drivers love.
In terms of cargo space, the XC40 offers 578 litres of cargo when full of passengers, and 1,337 litres when the 2nd row is flat. The XC40 Recharge has 578 litres behind the second-row seating and 1,328 litres when this row is flat.
In terms of technologies, both models provide plenty of passive and active safety features, like Volvo’s Pilot Assist, which helps the stay in the lane using steering assistance and maintain an even speed, combined with a preselected time interval to the vehicle ahead.
