The luxurious XC90 is designed to be one of the most advanced, efficient, and versatile family SUVs in its segment. Three available powertrains include hybrid and petrol options that satisfy a range of performance and efficiency needs.
Here, we compare the XC90 to the 2022 Acura MDX.
The 2021 Volvo XC90 offers better performance and efficiency
The XC90 lineup offers three of Volvo's finest powertrains. The T5 engine generates 250 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque in the Momentum model. Owners can enjoy the fuel consumption rating of 11.5 / 8.4 L/100 km (city/highway), which bests the MDX's rating of 12.6 / 9.4 L/100 km.
The XC90's T6 powertrain is available for all trims and provides a boost for drivers who want a little more, delivering 316 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Although more powerful than what the MDX offers, the all-gas T6 features a combined fuel consumption rating of 10.5 L/100 km, which is lower than the MDX's combined rating of 11.2 L/100 km.
The hybrid T8 powertrain system is also featured in the XC90. It outputs a lineup-best 400 horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque. Even with the high level of power, the Recharge is the most efficient SUV in this comparison with an efficiency rating of 9.1/8.4 L/100 km (city/highway).
The 2022 Acura MDX offers just one powertrain. The 3.5-litre V6 generates 290 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque, which is less than the XC90's T6- and T8-equipped models.
Overall, the XC90 delivers the best power and efficiency.
The 2021 Volvo XC90 offers more flexibility
The XC90 is built to drive your family's lifestyle. Every model has a towing capacity of 2,268 kg, extending the amount of options you can tow. The Acura states that 1,360.8 kg or 2,268 kg are 'available' for the MDX, meaning that you may need package upgrades to equal the XC90's capability.
The XC90 has advantages in other areas. It is more advanced technologically thanks to its intuitive Sensus infotainment system, as well as several advanced driver assistance features like the Pilot Assist, which provides you with steering assistance and help you to maintain the distance to the vehicle in front of you.
