The Volvo XC90 is an upscale SUV that sets itself apart from the luxury SUV pack with its unique Scandinavian style and flair, efficient powertrains and extensive safety features. Here, we compare it to the Lexus RX.
Power is a priority in a luxury SUV. And the XC90 offers three power levels to suit everyone’s needs. The T5 engine generates 250 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque in the Momentum trim. It consumes as low as 11.2 L/100 km in the city and 8.3 L/100 km on the highway. It is followed by the T6 which outputs 316 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque.
The hybrid option is the XC90’s T8 Plug-in Hybrid Electric (PHEV). This combination of a gasoline engine and electric motor produces 400 hp and 472 lb-ft of torque. It can even drive in full electric mode for a full 29 kilometres. This powertrain makes the XC90 one of the most efficient high-performance SUVs with a fuel consumption rating of only 9.1 L/100 km in the city and 8.4 L/100 km on the highway.
Two engines are available with the Lexus RX. First, there’s a 3.5-Litre six-cylinder engine which outputs 295 hp in the RX 350 and 290 hp in the RX 350 L. It has a bit more power than the XC90’s T5, but it is much less efficient at 12.2 L/100 km in the city and 9.0 L/100 km on the highway. Moreover, it has less power than the more common XC90 engine, the T6.
As for the hybrids, the RX 450h and 450h L include the 3.5 L which combines with an electric motor system that results in 308 net horsepower. Not only it has 100 fewer horses than the XC90’s hybrid, it’s not a PHEV and you can’t drive it on full electric mode.
More space in the 2021 Volvo XC90
The XC90 deploys up to 1,856 litres of cargo and passenger volume behind the front seats. That’s higher than the RX’s space, which clocks in at 1,580 litres. Behind the second row, the XC90 provides up to 1,019 litres of available space. The XC90 also features driver assistance technologies not included in the Lexus RX, like the Pilot Assist system that can steer and accelerate semi-autonomously at speeds of up to 130 km/h on clearly marked roads.
