The XC90 brings a refreshing take on a modern crossover. Volvo incorporates upscale Scandinavian design inside and out, providing rich functionality with original styling. The 2021 lineup offers advanced powertrains that strike a balance between efficiency and power that many competitors have difficulty in achieving. The roomy interior allows four different seating options that help customize the XC90 to the needs of many drivers and families.
We are excited to compare the XC90 to other competitors in the segment. Here, we compare it to the 2021 BMW X5.
The 2021 Volvo XC90 saves resources without sacrificing performance
Volvo continues to improve powertrain technologies with several options for the XC90. The Momentum trim includes the T5 engine that outputs 250 horsepower and a very responsive 258 lb-ft of torque. The T5-equipped XC90 also achieves the best fuel consumption rating of all gas engines in this comparison, attaining 11.5 L/100 km in the city and 8.4 L/100 km on the highway.
The T6 powertrain is also available in the XC90 lineup and delivers 316 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The BMW X5 xDrive40i trim has a 19-horsepower increase over the T6, but the T6 has the better fuel consumption rating of 12.1 L/100 km in the city and 8.5 L/100 km on the highway.
The 2021 Volvo XC90 has an efficient hybrid model
The new XC90 Recharge is one of the most advanced hybrid powertrains on the road. The system consists of a supercharged four-cylinder engine and electrical system that generates 400 horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque. More amazingly, the Recharge achieves a fuel efficiency rating of 9.1 / 8.4 L/100 km. (city/hwy)
The BMW xDrive45e lines up against the XC90 Recharge with a hybrid system that produces 389 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque. Although these numbers aren't far off, the xDrive45e's fuel consumption rating is. It is less efficient at 12.2/10.6 L/100 km.
The XC90 has much more to discover, including a refined, spacious interior that offers up to four different seating types. This allows the XC90 to accommodate the specific lifestyle and size of your family.
