The second-generation XC60 evolves to include the T8 Plug-in as an option in the model lineup. A best-seller in Europe, Canadians are taking notice of the T8 Plug-in's power, performance and luxury. Three trims make up the lineup, including the Inscription, R-Design, and Polestar Engineered. Other hybrids compete with the XC60 T8, including the Lexus RX 450h. Here, we compare both to help you make an informed purchasing decision.
The XC60 T8 Plug-in is wider and has a longer wheelbase and a better ground clearance than the RX 450h. This enables the XC60 T8 to go anywhere.
The 2020 Volvo XC60 unleashes hybrid performance
The XC60 T8 plug-in features the T8 Twin Engine that consists of electric and supercharged four-cylinder engines that work together to generate 400 horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque. The Polestar trim raises horsepower to 415 and torque to 494 lb-ft, adding performance that you wouldn't think possible in a luxury crossover.
On the contrary, the Lexus RX 450h and 450h L don't aspire to such numbers. Both models have a 3.5L six-cylinder hybrid engine that tops off at 308 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque. This is satisfactory in several situations, but the XC60 T8 plug-in is a special vehicle that doesn't enable much comparison.
The XC60 T8 also includes an eight-speed automatic transmission with start/stop technology and adaptive shifting. The 450 uses a continuously variable transmission. If you want a more traditional feel during shifting, then the Volvo has the right drivetrain for you.
Finally, the XC60 T8 Plug-in enables you to plug your SUV at home and take advantage of 30 kilometres of fully electric range. The Lexus RX 450h doesn’t have that technology.
The 2020 Volvo XC60 T8 Plug-in shows its versatility
With all its advancements, the XC60 T8 Plug-in knows how to stay true to its SUV roots. Front row passengers gain more leg room than in the RX 450, and rear seat passengers have more head and significantly more leg room. This counts on long trips with family or friends.
The Plug-in also proves that a luxury SUV can be versatile. With over 1,700 litres of cargo volume behind the front seats, it beats the RX 450's configurations of 1,580 litres (h trim) and 1,657 litres (h L trim).
